Genre is the style or category of film, music, art or literature. We use genre to put films into different classifications which allows us to know the target audience and common interests within the film.

GENRE RESEARCH

Located to the right is evidence of a group discussion we had out of school about what genre to base our film opening on. We discussed what would be most relatable to us and what we would enjoy creating.

This is a summary of the different genres that we looked into. Our main decision was between horror or a teen romcom but as horror movies are more common we decided to go with a teen romcom, which is also more relatable to us and the sixth form setting that we're in.

On the left is a group discussion about what we would include in our film opening and who is going to be responsible for which part they organise.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH

As part of our genre research, we created a questionnaire about what the target audience would like to see in a teen romcom and had them completed by other students at the sixth form. By doing this we can create an opening scene that is popular and would appeal to the target audience.

RESULTS

After gathering the data and putting the results into pie charts so we can more clearly analyse the results, we made some final decisions about what should be included in our film opening. The majority of people that we asked to complete the survey were aged 16, which is our ideal target audience - this means that the following answers are very useful in making decisions for our film opening as they are from our target age bracket. Our results also came from both female and male opinions which is helpful as it isn't just one perspective on a teen romcom film. Our next question was on what setting they would like to see in a teen rom com. Our ideas are from what we have seen when analysing film openings so we thought this would make it more relatable to the people taking the questionnaire. We found that the most popular setting would be a school or sixth form setting which is more relatable to our audience. The second most popular opinion was a house setting which we may incorporate into the opening but it is likely to be filmed entirely around the sixth form. We then asked what costumes they would like to see on the main female character by referring to three female characters from popular teen romcom films including Mean Girls for well dressed but casual clothing, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging for school uniform, and 10 Things I Hate About you for very casual clothing. The most popular opinion was was that similar to what is seen in Mean Girls which is ideal as it is closest to the sixth form setting and more relatable to the target audience. Following this we asked the same for the main male role. The images we used referred to High School Musical for a typical 'jock' look in a sports kit, 17 Again for a smarter look and Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging for a very casual look. The results showed that there was an equal amount that favoured the really causal look or the sports team 'jock' idea. I think this is due to it being more relatable to our high school and sixth form experience as most people have been involved with a sports team and it is the usual sixth form or college wear. The next question asked was about who they would like to see have the main role, either a male or female character. 90% of people who took the survey said they would prefer the main lead to be played by a female rather than a male. This is more conventional to a teen romcom as many are based around teenage girls and wanting to be in a relationship or and unsuccessful relationship.  In our film opening, sound and background music is very important for setting the right mood of the film. When asked what the soundtrack in the opening should be there was a larger vote of a happy, upbeat soundtrack to portray a happier, positive mood which is conventional for teen romcoms. It sets the mood for the film and it very rare that a teen film will have a negative vibe. In the openings for teen romcoms, there is often a lot of typography and the opening credits and the font of them. Most popular opinion on fonts to use is a sans serif font which tends to be more bold and gives of a more youthful vibe.

This data has allowed us to plan our film opening to be most popular and appealing to the target audience. The results are also very conventional to teen romcoms so our ideas can also be backed up by the research of film openings that i've looked at.

After discussion, we decided on the genre of teen romcom as it is a popular movie genre and more relatable to us and the sixth form environment, therefore allowing us to come up with creative ideas for the opening.
